School Vouchers Are Proving Critics Right, But It May Be Far Too Late

The public school system within the United States has, unsurprisingly, been subject to many calls for reform. Among the many propositions, school vouchers have become the most popular solution in recent years, particularly within the Trump Administration.

School vouchers, state-funded scholarships that use public education funds for private school tuition, were seen as a great way for low-income families to get their children access to education at private schools. However, as more and more states were getting these programs off the ground, criticism grew.

Many accuse these vouchers of harming low-income families and worsening the already fraught public education system. For many low-income families selected for these vouchers, the money provided is their primary means of paying for private tuition. This, unfortunately, leads to many families being unable to keep up with the expenses private schools demand. Low-income children are forced to drop out, while more wealthy families have an easier time.

Additionally, due to these vouchers being taken from public funds, this has the effect of public schools being given less and less money, degrading the upkeep in sectors that need it the most. However, the most concerning aspect is the quality of education within private schools. Due to being subject to different standards from public schools, there is an increased lack of accountability for what is being taught to children, particularly in subjects like science, health, and religion.

However, in a time where public opinion on the public education system is at an all-time low, families are eager for any solution, even ones that are as fraught as school vouchers.
