In a recent vote held this last Sunday, the Senate has voted 60-40 to advance a deal that could bring an end to the longest government shutdown in the history of the United States. All the deal requires now is to maintain the current support, pass through the House, and be signed by the president to finally end this long shutdown.
The deal just barely received the 60 votes needed to pass the agreement. 52 republicans, 7 democrats, and 1 independent senator voted for the deal, while the remaining voted against it.
The announcement that some progress has been made to end the shutdown is a relief to hear for millions of Americans who have been adversely affected by the suspension of government funding. The shutdown has lasted for well over a month now, and many federal workers have gone without two critical paychecks they need to maintain their livelihoods.
Additionally, millions of Americans who are reliant on SNAP benefits have been forced to go without them recently, and this has caused widespread issues across the country. Many famous celebrities and large organizations have made calls for the government to pass a resolution and end the shutdown, and it is relieving to hear that it seems meaningful progress has been made.
Hopefully, by the end of this week, the shutdown will be officially over and the millions of federal workers who were furloughed or forced to continue work without pay will be compensated for their hard work. Finally, those who have been suffering because of this decision will hopefully be able to bounce back and receive the aid they need.
