Underground Artist of the Month for October 2023

Bio

ShaSimone, the British-Ghanaian singer-rapper, has made remarkable strides in the music industry over the past two years. With a career that took off during the lockdown, she has quickly become a notable presence in the music scene. Born Shauna Yeboah, ShaSimone’s journey into music began with a strong foundation in poetry and a love for the art of Tupac Shakur. Her initial foray into rapping came through BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), where she and her friends exchanged voice notes of their rap verses. It wasn’t until 2020, amidst the global pandemic, that she decided to record her debut single, ‘Belly,’ which marked a turning point in her career.

Her breakthrough moment came when she lent her voice to Mercury Prize-winning rapper Dave on the track ‘Both Sides Of A Smile,’ taken from Dave’s UK number one album, ‘We’re All Alone In This Together.’ This collaboration catapulted her into the mainstream, and she earned widespread recognition for her talent. ShaSimone’s debut EP, ‘SIMMA DOWN,’ released in conjunction with a year of incredible growth, showcases her influences from ’90s hip-hop, R&B, and Afrobeats, blending them into a unique and fresh sound. The EP’s tracks delve into her experiences as a Black Londoner and a female rapper in a competitive industry, touching on topics like heartbreak and the complexities of situationships. With her distinctive style and determination to prove her longevity in the industry, ShaSimone is poised to make a lasting impact on the UK rap scene and beyond.
