Well, the night they wrote “Us” will be a night Taylor Swift and Gracie Abrams’ will never forget.
According to People.com, Abrams told Billboard she was at Taylor Swift’s New York City apartment after the two artists finished their new collaboration song “Us”. While the two were eating dinner and having drinks, a candle fell over in the kitchen and started a fire.
Even though it was roughly 6 am and she just finished a long night of songwriting, Taylor was fast on her feet. Grabbing a fire extinguisher, she stopped the flames before the fire could get out of control. According to Abrams, the fire extinguisher fumes gave them a nasty cough for a few weeks.
I can’t imagine inhaling fire extinguisher fumes being fun, but it’s way better than any other scenario that could have occurred.
Despite the small scare, the two singers had a fun night previewing each other’s music and singing and dancing “like theater kids” Abrams’ told Billboard. Almost simultaneously inspired when listening to instrumental versions of “Us” created by Aaron Dessner, the two immediately began to work on the lyrics.
Dessner told Billboard that he enjoyed working on “Us” because of how well Abrams and Swift got along. He mentioned that Abrams, who is relatively new to the music world, was in “total wonder and awe” when it came to Taylor recording and producing her songs.
The two singers had friendly relations before writing a song together, with People mentioning that Abrams was an opening act during Swift’s Eras tour.
When interviewed by People magazine, Abrams expressed her gratitude for Swift giving her a shot, claiming that being part of the Eras tour was life-changing. Emphasizing Swift’s performance skills, generosity, and how much she has done for her, Abrams continued to express her gratitude.
Abrams fully believes the opportunities Taylor gave her are why she is where she is today.
“Us” will be featured on Abrams’ upcoming album “The Secret of Us”. Releasing this Friday, June 21, let’s set a reminder to give it a listen.
