On April 12, Saturday Night Live released a sketch making fun of the Trump Administration as if they were in the TV show “White Lotus.” During the sketch, Sarah Sherman mocked “White Lotus” actress Aimee Lou Wood for her teeth and received major backlash.
While the sketch itself brilliantly criticized the Trump family and administration, they really did Wood dirty over her appearance, something she was born with and can’t help.
Wood called out SNL on Instagram, saying there must be “a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way” to “take the piss out” of someone. Wood received support from many people believing that SNL acted in poor taste. Actress Jameela Jamil called out SNL on what she viewed as a double standard placed on women.
In my opinion, having a unique smile shouldn’t be a punchline. Aimee Lou Wood’s teeth are part of what makes her stand out and beautifully unique. Once again, people are reducing women to their physical features and disregarding the fact that Wood has incredible talent and is an amazing actress.
There still haven’t been any comments or apologies from SNL since the sketch was released three days ago, and I, quite frankly, believe Wood deserved one.
Comedy doesn’t need to be mean-spirited and cruel to be effective. SNL has done great with creating sketches that do more than just mock someone’s appearance; why mock an actress who did nothing wrong except be born with a unique set of teeth?
