Soundtracks: What is their Appeal and why may Someone Listen?

Whenever you play a video game, listen to an audiobook, or watch a movie or some sort of video on the internet, it’s typically incomplete without a soundtrack of some sort playing in the background. Without a soundtrack to set the mood or energy of a piece of media, it often may feel off-kilter, which is why soundtracks are so crucial. But what about listening to them on their own?

Some tend to argue that soundtracks work so well because they are usually paired with media that soundtracks are inherently designed to be put together with, and when listened to on their own, they may lose that charm. However, I disagree. I feel that there is something you can get from listening to soundtracks that you wouldn’t be able to replicate with other forms of music.

Soundtracks are a key part of making or breaking a piece of content. So, when there is a great film or show with a memorable soundtrack, it cements itself as iconic and listening to its soundtrack in the future, while doing work, driving somewhere, or even just listening to it on its own, can bring back similar feelings that you felt when you first consumed that great piece of content. “Lord of the Rings,” “Jurassic Park” and “Doom” are just a few examples of the many pieces of media with soundtracks that work well not just in their respective work but on their own as a great music genre to listen to for one’s own enjoyment.
