With summer being in full swing, the swimsuit design debate has started all over again, and will resume when the next summer rolls around. While everyone has their particular swimsuit design they gravitate towards, recent years have seen internet users expressing their hate for tankinis.
For years, tankinis have been seen as a modest option for people who aren’t interested in wearing a bikini. They provide wearers more coverage while still being stylish and flexible to wear in water. While many have voiced their dislike for tankinis, due to them being seen as ugly, tankinis have also unfortunately had some political connotations thrown at them. Many conservative influencers have lauded tankinis as a more flattering and respectable type of clothing to wear on beaches, particularly within the tradwife aesthetics.
While modesty has always been valid on an individual basis, pushing tankinis on women as a more valid type of swimwear left a bad taste in many people’s mouths. It is unfortunate because tankinis aren’t inherently bad, so it is heartening to see that more people are turning the perception around about this particular piece of clothing.
At the end of the day, tankinis should be another option for women to wear in the summer, not a requirement. It is alright to want to be modest or not want to show that much skin. Having that option allows women a choice in how they express their bodies. People feel pressured to wear or not wear tankinis, or any type of swimwear, within reason.
