The Day Obiri Conquered the New York Marathon

On November 2, 2025, Hellen Obiri made history at the New York Marathon. She crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 51 seconds, setting a new women’s course record.

Obiri’s win was incredible, especially considering she also won the race in 2023. She ran with 2022 winner Sharon Lokedi most of the way until she moved ahead of her during the final mile, winning by 16 seconds. The previous record was made by Margaret Okayo who ran a 2:22 :31 in 2003.

Her victory matters for a few reasons. One, it shows progress in women’s marathon running because breaking a record like that after so long shows the sport is still evolving. Two, it shows Obiri’s consistency, dedication and hard work. She’s now won for two years, but this time it was a historic one.

“It feels so great. … I am so happy to run the course record,” Obiri said. “With 1K to go I felt like I was so strong. I have something left in my tank.”

For aspiring runners this win is inspiring. It shows that even the most famous records can be broken and history can be made. Obiri ran through all five New York boroughs, across bridges and into Central Park while being watched by thousands of viewers. Actually, she didn’t just run that marathon; she took it in her own hands and made it hers.

For the sport itself this is a very impressive moment. The women’s division at New York isn’t aiming to compete against the old record anymore. Instead, they’re chasing after the new one because Obiri has officially raised the bar for them.

In the end, the day Obiri conquered New York was more than a win. It was proof of preparation and will.
