The Greatness of Roberta Flack

The legendary musician & keyboardist passed away on January 24th, 2025. She was only 88 years old. Although her death is tragic, she has left behind a massive impact in the music community. An impact that has stood the test of time.

She was the first artist to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in two consecutive years. “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” (1973) and “Killing Me Softly with His Song” (1974).

The North Carolina native was renowned for her minimalist, classically trained approach to music. Her vocals were rapturous yet smooth. Often cited as an influence on the contemporary R&B genre, Quiet Storm.

To most, she was well known for her collabs with the late R&B titan Donny Hathaway, with the hits:

“Where Is the Love” (1972)

“The Closer I Get to You” (1978)

“Back Together Again” (1979)

Staples in Black radio, cookouts, roller jams, and block parties. Enough to have anyone’s Mom, Auntie, and Grandma want to hit the dance floor

Overall, she is one of the greatest artists and performers of all time. Roberta was an esteemed educator, a trait reflected in her music. She is survived by her three grandchildren: Bernard Jr., Christopher and Victoria Wright. May her contributions and efforts continue to touch the lives of many for the foreseeable future.

Rest In Beats Roberta Flack.
