The Harry Potter TV Adaptation Might Be A Waste Of Time

Discussion surrounding the upcoming HBO television adaptation of Harry Potter since its announcement in 2023. Audience reception was quite mixed despite how much precedent a production like this has had in the years leading up to it.

Technology has advanced to the point where fantasy television shows can now match the scale of their source material. Additionally, modern Fantasy television has been missing a myriad of things that a Harry Potter television series will give.

Television shows like Game of Thrones have scaled back on the whimsical aspects of fantasy, portraying magic and magical creatures like dragons in a more grounded and gritty setting. While Harry Potter is no stranger to darker themes, modern fantasy television has struggled to sell audiences on a world they would want to live in.

That said, the Harry Potter franchise’s reputation is in a drastically different situation from a decade ago. Franchise creator J.K. Rowling has done a significant amount of damage to the franchise’s brand image due to her outspoken comments against people within the LGBTQ community.

Her support of far-right causes in the United States and the UK has alienated her from much of the fanbase her franchise had accrued; the same could be said of much of the original cast from the Harry Potter movies. The franchise will always be tied back to her, no matter how much separation the productions have put between it and her comments.

Additionally, many fans see the upcoming series as redundant, considering the success of the film adaptations.
