This year’s Masters Tournament has officially ended this week, putting an end to the intriguing and thrilling spectacle. With the tournament done, it leaves us to inspect the results and gauge whether they were surprising or not.
Firstly, we have Rory McIlroy as the first-place winner, making him one of the few golfers to achieve a grand slam in his career. Anyone who has been paying attention to Rory’s games should not be too surprised by his victory at the tournament. He has had an amazing year and has displayed multiple times why he deserves this achievement.
However, that isn’t to imply that he did not have rough competition, as Justin Rose was hot on his tail throughout the tournament and proved to many why he was once considered the best in the world. Their playoff against each other was truly tense and could have gone either way. Patrick Reed, Scottie Scheffler, and Im Sung-Jae rounded out the top five players of the tournament, making for a greatly talented group of winners for the year.
One thing that did catch many by surprise was the presence of tension that was felt when Bryson DeChambeau reported to interviewers that McIlroy didn’t speak a word to him during the finals. This has led to people thinking there may be some bad blood between the two, as the pair did have bad exchanges with each other in the past. Of course, this is only speculation, and DeChambeau has dismissed any sort of hatred between the two. It was a tense day for everyone, so Rory could have simply been too focused to make small talk. Overall, I would say that the tournament went about as much as everyone expected but still managed to be quite a show.
