Mascara has always been my least favorite part of doing my makeup. There are always clumps, smudges and that constant worry of either too little or way too much. It’s genuinely exhausting. All that struggle, until I came to such an obvious conclusion – no one is forcing me to wear mascara. It sounds silly, but when you get caught up in tutorials or the “right” way to do things, you start to forget that makeup is supposed to be for you.
So, I just stopped wearing it. And, it seems like many have done the same. More and more people are skipping mascara and are embracing their natural lashes, and it has left me wondering: Is it just the newfound ease, or has this new look truly taken off?
This no-mascara trend doesn’t just exist by itself; rather, it’s part of a larger movement towards minimal makeup and “skin-first” beauty. Forget the days of heavy foundation and falsies, we’re now entering an era of authenticity, driven by what I believe to be a societal want for realness in an oversaturated, image-driven culture.
We are tired, and, as an act of defiance, are rethinking traditional beauty standards by embracing looks that feel effortless and genuine. Social media influencers and celebrities have encouraged this trend by showing off their natural lashes and low-maintenance routines, proving to us that heavy products are no longer needed to make a statement.
For some, skipping mascara is about challenging the norms of an eye look – making a statement by opting out of a bold lash. For me, though, it’s all about ease. Mornings have become faster, makeup removal is seamless and I no longer find myself stressing over smudges throughout the night. Plus, there’s something so refreshing about the simplicity. It sounds counterintuitive, but bare lashes are almost more eye-catching than a fully made-up look – proof that beauty doesn’t have to be complicated.
We are finally beginning to reject the concept that more products equal more beauty. This small change is giving way to a larger shift in beauty culture, where people are learning the power of simplicity. We are all obsessed with perfection, and who can blame us – it’s literally programmed into our daily lives. This, though, feels like a small, yet powerful, act of confidence and freedom.
