The Paterson Water Main Crisis Might Be An Unfortunate Wakeup Call

A water main burst in Paterson, New Jersey, caused over 70,000 people to be under a boil water advisory for over a week. This not only hindered residents from cooking, cleaning, and using utilities at home, but also various restaurants and other businesses in the area. According to the Associated Press (AP), the affected water main was reported to be 140 years old.

While an official reasoning for the water main break is still unknown, the uproar from residents is far from over. While many were frustrated by the length of time it took to restore the water main, most of the anger centered on its age. Despite having remarkable craftsmanship, many are wondering whether the disaster could have been prevented if the water mains had been replaced with newer versions.

The effect of the disaster in Paterson can be easily expanded to much of the United States’ East Coast, due to the area being one of the oldest parts of the country. The hundreds and thousands of old pipes beneath our feet have certainly lasted long, but who’s to say another one is geared to fail?

Upkeep of infrastructure has been an ongoing problem within the country, affecting not just piping, but also roads, bridges, and buildings. Public pressure remains crucial to ensure that elected officials in local and federal governments take meaningful steps toward infrastructure improvements. By actively contacting representatives, supporting relevant initiatives, and staying informed, individuals can help drive preventative action before the next disaster forces a response.
