The days of seeing rainbow-hued cereal and coffee could be coming to an end. Two weeks ago, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wants to end a longstanding rule allowing food companies to use new additives, including artificial dyes, that have not undergone FDA safety review. He wants all artificial dye gone by the end of his term, showing a determined effort on that front. In January, the FDA banned the color additive Red Dye 3 due to data showing it causes cancer in rats.
The “loophole” being considered a process used to make it easier for companies to sell products containing food additives. Specifically, those that had a history of being deemed safe like salt and honey. Companies have begun to understand, adding to the fact of complaints of FDA’s long review process of new food additives.
The rulemaking to ban artificial dyes in food approximately takes 2 years to come into fruition. It’s already in effect as brands such as PepsiCo and Ruffles are eliminating synthetic dyes in favor of natural ingredients. Prompting a higher level of awareness for American consumers for health and wellness.
So, those synthetic red colors you see in “Taki’s” and “Cheetos”, it’s best to move away from those flavors in terms of your health. Be more mindful.
