The Super Bowl: A Sports Fan’s Christmas

The second Sunday in February every year marks every football fanatic’s favorite holiday: The Super Bowl. The top two teams from the NFL fight for the Lombardi trophy, in hopes to bring home both the title and worldwide recognition. Not only is this a major sports event, but it somehow finds its way into the homes and hearts of those who love the game.

Throughout the NFL season, friends and families come together to cheer on their home team and their favorite players. Each game is a sacred event for big-time sports fans. The couch becomes a permanent seat for hours, the only foods allowed are pizza and chicken wings, and beer is a necessity to get through the stress our players cause. If every Sunday is a minor holiday, what makes Super Bowl Sunday the biggest of all?

The two teams competing are labeled the two best of that entire season, those who have remained at the top of their game for roughly 21-22 weeks. We celebrate the grueling physical activity, the perseverance, and the plays that have brought them to the title they have already earned. Even if they are not our home teams, sports families often choose one of the teams to cheer on as if they are our own. It is not just a love for our teams, but a love and appreciation of football as a whole.

For those who aren’t crazy about football, we often find them celebrating Sunday as well. The Super Bowl brings crazy commercials to our television screens, with our favorite celebrities gracing our TV between plays. Many watch the event just for the commercials, hoping to see the best brands and celebrities rather than the actual sport. Furthermore, there is always an awesome performer at halftime. This performance is one of the most-watched of the year, and often brings a musical and theatrical break between halves. Even for those with no interest in the sport find a seat on the couch on Super Bowl Sunday.

In just a few weeks, it will be Super Bowl Sunday again, and we will find ourselves itching to see the game, the commercials, and Bad Bunny all at the same event. Football fanatics, sports fans as a whole, and those with a love of commercials and music will celebrate what may as well be Christmas Day in many households across the nation and the world.
