The Surrealism Of Bring Her Back

Picture this sequence: it’s April Fool’s Day. A24 drops a trailer for a project that looks like a typical newlywed couple moving into a new house. At first glance you feel as if it’s going one way but as you watch the rest of the trailer – it goes into a completely different direction. There is a shot of a bald headed child in an empty pool and spooky VHS tape recordings. All the visual collages come to a halt when a calm woman’s voice chimes. She breathes before saying – “we have to bring her back”.

Directed by brothers Danny and Michael Philippou—the film is slated to be released on May 30. There has been a huge momentum rising with the April first trailer amassing nine million views on YouTube. The second trailer already has two million views and that only dropped yesterday. An impressive feat when you realize the Philipou’s were YouTubers doing content before transitioning as film directors. If that isn’t inspiring to a creative person then I don’t know what else can elicit that motivation.

Interestingly, it has an incredibly intriguing cast. “Bring Her Back” will be starring Sally Hawkins, Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, and more. What’s funny is that the actors have been involved in happy, upbeat films—Sally Hawkins starred as lead in the film “Happy-Go-Lucky” (2008). I guess you can argue that it serves as a deconstruction of those actors and actresses roles.

Make sure you check out “Bring Her Back” later this month. No one does horror like A24—and this film looks to continue that tradition.
