The Top 12 on Apple Music are only Popular due to Social Media (Op-Ed)

The current Top Global 12 songs on Apple Music include “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey, “Expresso” by Sabrina Carpenter, “I Had Some Help” (feat. Everyone loves these songs for their unique styles and catchy tunes. However, they share a commonality in being part of current trends on TikTok. Upon release, each song closely resonated with listeners which led to the creation of TikToks that express their personal experiences to the music. For instance, Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has inspired multiple trends depicting American party scenes and personal stories of alcoholism.

The appeal of these songs lies in their ability to resonate with listeners and evoke memories of their own lives. Yet, their sustained presence in the Top 12 charts is also fueled by their frequent appearance in other TikTok videos, as well as people memorizing lyrics for their content. These songs become ingrained in popular culture after hours spent listening to TikToks featuring their music. While enjoying these songs, it’s also worth exploring other musical offerings and giving underrated artists a chance to shine.
