The Underlying Meta Storyline the Jurassic World Films Are Following and Why It Doesn’t Work

The modern day “Jurassic Park,” films, no matter how good or bad, have been a huge hit and are a testament to the inherent fascination with dinosaurs that people have. But there’s one thing that the modern “Jurassic World,” films have been getting wrong and that is the meta storyline of hybrid and mutated dinosaurs. Don’t get me wrong, the hybrid dinos aren’t inherently a bad thing and can honestly act as a major upside to these films sometimes. However, to quote Claire Dearing, played by actress Bryce Dallas Howard, “No one is impressed by a dinosaur anymore,” which couldn’t be more off the mark.

People’s modern-day lack of interest in dinosaurs is the in-universe reasoning given in “Jurassic World,” for the creation of the hybrid Indominus Rex. At first it acted as an interesting meta commentary on commercialism and consumerism and is essential for Dearing’s character arc throughout the films, yet it quickly falls apart when you take a step back to look at this franchise as a whole.

Every single film is crammed to the brim with scenes of characters gawking in amazement at dinosaurs. Kids in these films scream in excitement whenever they see a Tyrannosaurus chomp down on a goat. Even in real life the reason these films are so successful in the first place is that people like dinosaurs. Yet these films keep pushing this idea that nobody likes dinosaurs anymore and creating new mutated creations as a sort of meta commentary that simply does not hold up. The only film in the world series that didn’t follow this trend is “Dominion,” which, don’t get me wrong, is an extremely awful film and yet it seems they are returning to this idea with their new mutant Tyrannosaurus Rex in “Jurassic World Rebirth.”

Of course, this idea that dinosaurs aren’t popular anymore isn’t the entire point these films are trying to make, as these films have a variety of different ideas and plot threads implemented into this series. However, the existence of this underlying meta commentary is inherently there and it doesn’t really hold up.
