Three people are dead, and one remains missing after a boat sank off of Staten Island, New York, on Sunday, Feb. 23, officials say. The U.S. Coast Guard and multiple local agencies responded to the emergency distress call.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported that they received a call around noon on Sunday that a boat was taking on water near Breezy Point in Queens, according to a press release. Responding units rushed to the scene to locate the ship and victims.
According to the Coast Guard’s press release, they recovered five people from the sinking vessel, but four out of the five were unresponsive. The Coast Guard immediately administered CPR to some of the victims before they airlifted them to Staten Island University Hospital. Despite their efforts, three of the rescued individuals did not survive, two were injured, and one remains missing.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Coast Guard watchstanders issued an urgent broadcast, which deployed three rescue boats from the Coast Guard Station in New York and Station Sandy Hook. Additionally, an MH-65 helicopter was deployed from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.
Local emergency response teams, including NYPD, FDNY, and New Jersey State Police crews, also joined efforts to locate the missing person and provide assistance to the victims. Authorities have not yet released any information about the victims or the search for the missing person; more updates will come.
