Top 5 Favorites for the Heisman Trophy (Op-Ed)

Today is the official release date of EA Sports’ College Football 25 video game. This means college football is finally right around the corner, so let’s look at some of the favorites to win this year’s Heisman Trophy award.

  1. Dillon Gabriel, Oregon Ducks

The favorite to win the award in the 2024-25 season is the Duck’s new QB, Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel is coming from an electric season at Oklahoma where he threw for 3,660 yards, 30 TDs, and just 6 interceptions. He was in the conversation late into the season in 2023, but some unprecedented losses by Oklahoma took him out of the running. Gabriel will fit right in with Oregon’s high-flying offense which should allow for even more touchdown passes in 2024.

  1. Carson Beck, Georgia Bulldogs

The Bulldogs have won two of the last three national championships, and after a disappointing end to the 2023 season, they are looking to come back even stronger this time around. I also expect receiver Dillon Bell to take a huge step up and become a true number-one target for Beck. Beck, heading into his senior season, will be looking to put the team on his back and prove even with the loss of some key players to the NFL that he too has what it takes to become a pro.

  1. Quinn Ewers, Texas Longhorns

Texas is back. The Longhorns were finally able to make it back to the College Football Playoff in 2023, and even though they came up short it feels like the powerhouse has been reestablished. He is the unquestioned leader in a locker room that is still full of guys ready to compete for a championship. Although his stats may not match up with other QBs, his grit and will to win is what puts him atop this list. Not to mention the stud receiver that Texas stole from our next team.

  1. Jalen Milroe, Alabama Crimson Tide

It feels like year in and year out Bama manages to have a new name on the Heisman favorites list. Last year in what should have been a down year for the Tide, they managed to make it all the way to the College Football Playoff.  A massive reason for this was Milroe’s 3,365 scrimmage yards and 35 total touchdowns. With Kobe Prentice poised to become a star, the expectation is even more yards and even more touchdown passes. Although he does not have the best arm talent on this list, he makes up for it with his legs. I foresee a 3,000 and 800 year for the junior QB.

  1. Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss Rebels

Dart has been one of the more overlooked quarterbacks in all of college football. He has a great arm and is even capable of escaping the pocket and picking up extra yards with his legs. Dart has gotten better and better throughout his collegiate career and the senior now is surrounded by the most talent he’s ever had. Don’t be surprised if Ole Miss is a playoff team and Dart is on the stage at the Lincoln Center come winter.

College football kicks off Saturday, Aug. 24 at noon with the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, with Florida State versus Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland.
