Transgender Women Athletes Banned from Olympic Games’ Women’s Events

As recently as 18 hours ago, many news outlets were reporting the recent decisions of the IOC (International Olympic Committee) that call for a ban on transgender female athletes from competing in female events at the Olympics.  According to “The Guardian”, this decision was made as to protect the fairness for the players and to not to grant anyone an advantage during the Olympic events for 2028.

“It would not be fair for biological males to compete in the female category,” stated Kirsty Coventry, president of the International Olympic Committee. Standing firm for the decision, Coventry continued on to say, “as a former athlete, I passionately believe in the rights of all Olympians to take part in fair competition”.

And with that said, I am left to ponder the following question: How are transgender female athletes able to take part in the Olympics?

In our current society, we only have two categories in which athletes are allowed to compete, men and women.  Following this landmark decision, this leaves no room for transgender female athletes to take part in the Olympics.

While Coventry made this decision, intending to create a “fair” competition, the IOC failed to see and consider the inequality and discrepancy in the opportunities for transgender female athletes.  In excluding them from being able to participate, this decision directly goes against the fairness and opportunity for athletes competing during the Olympics. This is not a fair decision. And it will never be a fair decision until all transgender athletes are provided an equal opportunity to compete in the Olympics.
