Trump Pardons Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández

In a recent decision by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, pardoned the former president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández.

For those unaware, Juan Orlando Hernández, the President of Honduras for 8 years, was convicted and sentenced to 45 years in prison and was required to pay an $8 million fine. This sentence was handed down by a US judge for drug trafficking offenses within the United States.

The decision to pardon a former president who was convicted and found guilty of drug trafficking was met with confusion and controversy among Republicans and Democrats. Many do not understand why the President has decided to pardon the man since the administration is currently working to stop drug trafficking into the United States.

When asked to explain the decision, press secretary Karoline Leavitt had this to say, “This was a clear Biden over-prosecution,” they continued, “He was the president of this country. He was in the opposition party. He was opposed to the values of the previous administration, and they charged him because he was president of Honduras.”

This explanation has not been sufficient for many, especially since during Trump’s first term, Hernández’s brother was prosecuted by Emil Bove, who Trump appointed to become a federal judge.

Hernández’s attorney Renato Stabile gave the following statement: “On behalf of President Hernandez and his family I would like to thank President Trump for correcting this injustice. President Hernandez is glad this ordeal is over and is looking forward to regaining his life after almost 4 years in prison,”

It is uncertain exactly why Juan Orlando Hernández was pardoned at this time. Hopefully, this decision will not be a mistake, and it can help the United States in the future.
