Donald Trump claims that the reason behind this decision is due to Zohran’s “communist” ideologies, which he believes will threaten the city. One such example he mentions is Zohran’s plans for city-owned supermarkets in the city, which have been criticized for being an overreach in the government’s control. Trump also notes Zohran’s inexperience and has shown more favoritism towards Cuomo.
As far as the takeover goes, the public is unsure if the president is serious about this threat. Trump has made several claims regarding New York throughout this year alone, and to date, no notable action has been taken on his behalf. Furthermore, the actual legality of such a power move is murky at best and undermines the voting power of the city’s people. However, the threat still shouldn’t be taken lightly, as it potentially highlights the trouble that could be imposed on the city if Zohran becomes mayor.
