U.S Mint Stops Production of 1-Cent Pennies

Recently, the United States has put a halt to the production of the 1-cent coin. As the value of the coin has become increasingly worthless over time and with the rise of digital transactions, the usefulness of pennies has dropped dramatically.

When the coin was introduced in the past, it was able to purchase products such as candles on its own. In the modern day, due to inflation, a penny is mostly used to give change and is rarely used to purchase products.

Additionally, the price to produce a penny has risen above its value. Currently, it costs around 4 cents to produce a single penny, meaning that it costs more to produce the coin than its actual value. With the Trump Administration being set on reducing government spending, they have decided to shut down the production of pennies, as it is a loss for the nation overall.

The United States Treasurer Brandon Beach gave the following statement shortly before shutting off the last mint producing pennies: “God bless America, and we’re going to save the taxpayers $56 million,”.

The final coins that were produced are set to be auctioned off to collectors who wish to own one of the last coins produced on the market.

The response to the move to stop production of the penny has been mixed. Some think that overall, the decision was a good move that will save American taxpayers millions of dollars each year; others think that the halt will cause widespread issues for the nation.

Businesses are adapting to the change, but it is too soon to know how this change will impact the nation.
