Yesterday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. UConn’s 38th Student Health and Wellness Fair took place on Fairfield Way at their campus. Students involved in the fair at the university thought that this was the perfect opportunity to check in and help other students as things started to pick up this semester.
SHaW program manager for sexual health and peer education initiatives, Cassy Setzler was interviewed about the fair. “Sometimes it can feel really overwhelming to have so many resources available, and I think a fair is a fun way to experience a ‘sampling’ of what we have to offer, and to get to know the folks who are here to help…It’s a community effort!” she said.
Cecile Serazo from the Eastern Highlands Health District shared her experience of hosting a display and table at the fair. “It was great, we saw a lot of people for blood pressures, information for vaccines, and information on eastern equine encephalitis…everyone was very nice, and we got a lot of people.” She seemed ecstatic about the experience and felt it was very successful overall.
This event was to help with kids’ health and wellbeing. The topics covered at the event were disease prevention, first aid, substance abuse, mental health, sexual health, etc. They did so by playing games and setting up tables with informational displays, even handing out prizes at the end. They aimed to make these topics less niche and make it more comforting for students while also giving them something to look forward to.
