US Government Shuts Down

As of today, October 1st, the United States government has shut down, causing some non-essential government services to stop operation.

The shutdown occurred because democrats and republicans disagreed on how to proceed with a spending bill and refused to let the bill pass. The disagreement resulted from a healthcare spending bill that democrats are adamant must include an extension of tax credits and reverse previous cuts to Medicaid that have been made.

While we have had government shutdowns in the past, it is generally not a good thing for one to occur. As of today, it is estimated that around 750,000 government workers have had their jobs suspended or have been discharged. Widespread economic repercussions are expected to begin appearing within the next few days across the nation.

The government shutdown could be resolved within the next few days if either side decides to back down and pass the resolution. However, if both sides stand firm, this shutdown can last for weeks. The longest government shutdown the United States has ever experienced was 35 days over the funds needed to build the US-Mexico border wall in 2018.

Currently, both republicans and democrats are blaming the other party for the shutdown, shifting the blame back and forth as to who is responsible. Some senators from both parties are shifting sides, throwing their votes behind the opposite party in an effort to restore government operation.

For the average citizen, you may notice that some government support systems will be put on hold until the situation is resolved. Mail will still be delivered, police will remain active, and hospitals will still be able to provide medical care. However, non-essential services such as food assistance programs and federally funded schooling will most likely be suspended until a resolution is reached.

Hopefully, Congress can reach a resolution swiftly and prevent any long-term repercussions due to this disagreement.
