Wait…You Can Just Give Away Your Nobel Peace Prize?

On Jan. 15, 2026, opposition leader of Venezuela, María Corina Machado, met with President Donald Trump at the White House with the purpose of discussing the future of Venezuela.  Following the recent removal of Nicolás Maduro, the deposed leader of Venezuela by the United States military, current opposition leader, María Corina Machado intends to remain part of Venezuela’s future as she advocates for the country to return to democracy.

During the meeting between Trump and Machado, Machado praised Trump for his immense commitment and dedication for the freedom of Venezuela.  “As a recognition for his unique commitment with our freedom,” Machado stated, she then presented Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize during their meeting at the White House.

Following this, Trump then took to social media to express his gratitude for the presented gift, citing how the gesture showed “mutual respect”.  Written on the social media platform, Truth Social, Trump expressed, “It was my Great Honor to meet María Corina Machado, of Venezuela, today. She is a wonderful woman who has been through so much. María presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you María!”

My response to this recent piece of news perhaps echoes the thoughts of many Americans when I say this: What?  Really?  Normally, I would construct a stronger sentence that presents the news and facts free of any biases, but this recent news in politics really stumps me because what else can I say?

Even the Nobel committee addressed this, citing how an award, “cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others. This decision is final and stands for all time.”

The Nobel Peace Prize is something that is not handed to you.  It is something that one earns from hard work, dedication, and commitment to a cause worth of value.  It is something that stems from struggle and perseverance towards a subject of passion.  It is not something you can trade and transfer like credit.
