Saturday marked the conclusion of the grueling Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Tournament. The ATP 500 tournament lasted for a week as many of the top players of the circuit competed to hold the trophy and catapult themselves up the ranks. Russian-native Daniil Medvedev came out on top, lifting the trophy in unorthodox fashion as his anticipated final against Tallon Griekspoor ended before it even started.
Griekspoor, born in the Netherlands, reached only his second 500-level final in Dubai. He unfortunately withdrew from the final a few hours before as he picked up an injury during his tightly contested semifinal match against 18th-ranked Andrey Rublev where the Dutch player reigned victorious with a straight-set 7-5, 7-6 win.
Medvedev sent speedy-recovery wishes to the Dutch star as he would have rather won the title by any other means. The Dubai trophy adds to Medvedev’s legendary resume as he has now claimed his 23rd ATP Title and his second title of the 2026 season.
But would you believe that Medvedev’s victory in Dubai is not what has tennis fans buzzing at the moment?
Travel restrictions have now been put in place as the U.S.’s and Israel’s attacks on Iran have marked a global frenzy. Middle Eastern travel has been shut down, meaning that players and athletes that traveled to Dubai are currently struggling to find a way to leave the country. What makes matters even worse is that some of the athletes that are trapped in the country were planning to compete in the Paralympics. The event is expected to begin on Friday, and organizers are still in limbo on how they are going to resolve travelling conflicts as an appearance for some of the athletes is not guaranteed.
Daniil Medvedev is expected to participate in the Indian Wells Masters 1000 event on Wednesday, yet the status of his return to the U.S. is still uncertain. The Russian reached the semifinal of the 2025 edition of the tournament before losing to Holger Rune in straight sets. Medvedev is looking to defend his points to avoid another drop in the rankings, but with the travelling shut down in place, he is unable to leave until travel restrictions are completely lifted.
Fortunately, the safety of all of the athletes that are currently in Dubai is in good hands. While Medvedev is staying with a friend who resides in the Middle Eastern country, many other athletes have received hotel accommodations where they have been offered full services to keep them fulfilled until they are allowed to leave. With the recent attacks, it is unknown when the travel will be allowed again, potentially impacting all athletes who are staying in the country and their abilities to participate in their upcoming events.
