It was reported earlier today that officials in Atlantic County, NJ have found positive tests for the West Nile Virus—a sample collected from the 100 block of Route 50 in Estell Manor in local mosquitoes.
Mosquito control officials have begun conducting control measures and monitoring West Nile bugs throughout the area. This discovery comes less than a week after a positive test was found by Shore Road in the same county.
Kara Johnson, a public health officer, has made it clear that no positive tests have been found in humans and that these situations are still under surveillance.
That said, there could be cause for concern considering that Atlantic County has already had both human and horse cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis. For those who don’t know, EEE and West Nile are transmitted by mosquitoes.
Below are three tips to keep you and others safe from possibly infected mosquitoes.
- Use an insect repellent whenever going outdoors.
- Rid properties of mosquito breeding grounds by draining standing water. (Mosquitoes do not travel far from where they breed.)
- Clean your gutters, and fix any broken screen doors.
