What Does Showing Up Really Mean in 2025?

Alright, I’ll say it: most of us are not spending our weekends trying to understand government stuff or showing up at city hall with a sign. Some people are (and truly, good for them), but the rest of us are just doing our best — juggling life, laundry, and whatever disaster pops up in the news every five minutes.

Still, I’m sure some people out there might be thinking, “Okay, but if I actually wanted to get involved… what would that even look like?” So here’s a simple rundown of what “showing up” politically can mean in 2025 — even if you don’t think of yourself as a political person.

First up: petitions. Basically the introvert’s protest (and honestly, the most likely option I’d pick if it came down to it). You read a quick little message, maybe skim the fine print (or not — let’s be honest), and click a button to add your name. Boom. You’ve participated. Not every petition changes the world, but some actually move things forward. It’s a small tool, but sometimes it works. And you can do it from your couch, possibly while wearing mismatched socks with holes in them (who’s judging?). Very efficient.

Then there’s protesting, which can sound intense if you’ve never been to one (I know it definitely does to me). But not everyone is there chanting or giving speeches. A lot of people just show up, stand around, and let their presence speak. Some bring snacks. Some leave early. It still matters. You don’t have to be loud to be part of something bigger than you.

And if the idea of going outside sounds exhausting (mood), there’s always the underrated option of emailing or calling your local representatives. In local politics especially, a small number of messages can actually make a difference.

Honestly, even just talking about real issues in your group chat counts. Or reposting something helpful. Or taking five minutes to learn what’s going on in your own city. These are small things, but small things stack up. Awareness is part of action.

You don’t have to do all of this. You don’t have to do any of it.

No pressure. Just possibilities.
