White House Releases Website for January 6 Anniversary

Yesterday marked the 5th anniversary of a truly dark day in American history. On January 6, 2021, violent insurrectionists stormed our nation’s Capitol building after being incited by Donald Trump over the loss of the 2020 presidential election. These Trump supporters made accusations that the election was stolen and cried for then-Vice President Mike Pence and Congress to overturn the results.

Americans watched a coup attempt unfold live as rioters, many carrying firearms, marched towards the Capitol Building, and attacked Capitol Police Officers, claiming their actions would “Save America”. I remember being glued to the television screen in horror, constantly refreshing my phone as I watched this event transpire. To some, that day continues to be a nightmare. A warning about how far some people are willing to go and how fragile our government may be.

And to celebrate, Donald Trump and the White House have released a website “honoring” the patriotic actions taken that day. This website aims to paint the events as a peaceful protest that simply got out of hand, as Trump supporters participated in their “god-given” right to protest. It also argues that the whole “insurrection thing” was a hoax, created by Democrats to make Trump seem like a villain. It says verbatim, “Nancy Pelosi spent over 3 years and nearly $20 million in taxpayer funds on her partisan Select Committee, producing a scripted TV spectacle to fabricate an “insurrection” narrative and pin all blame on President Trump.”

As sad as it is, the presentation of misinformation and blatant lies presented as facts on this website does not surprise me in the least. If Donald Trump and this administration have done anything, it’s demonstrated that they don’t care about the truth or being accountable for their actions.

This website is dangerous. Presenting this revisionist version of the January 6th insurrection as a day that merits celebration should scare you. It certainly scares me. It is of the utmost importance that people remember what actually occurred that day. We continue to see attempts to rewrite history to promote certain agendas and the banning of books deemed against those ideas. Americans themselves must work to preserve fact and truth, because it is clear that this administration doesn’t care about such things in the slightest.
