Every summer, it feels like the literary snobs are reawakened to criticize our beloved beach reads. You know, those breezy, feel good books we toss into our beach bags. Critics write them off as playful, formulaic and even a bit embarrassing. But, why is it that a book’s worthiness depends on how serious it is?
Not every book can be the next literary masterpiece, and honestly, not every book should try. Beach reads fulfill an important purpose – comfort and escapism. Plus, a little fun on the side. In a world where everything is always so serious, beach reads offer just what they advertise – a vacation.
The literary world is full of elitism and snobbery. It has strict limitations of what is considered “real literature.” Romance, thrillers and feel-good stories almost rarely make the cut. These ideas, however, are extremely outdated and, for lack of a better word, pretentious. Just because something is an easy read, doesn’t make it any less worthwhile.
Popularity does not equate to inferiority. Now to think of it, some of the best “classics” were once considered unsophisticated. Plus, any reading is good reading. These beach reads keep people turning pages. They prioritize storytelling, imagination and help people build empathy. And, people too often underestimate just how good they can be. Some of my favorite beach reads are clever, moving and surprisingly insightful.
So, get off your high horse. The next time you head to the beach, leave “House of Leaves” at home and grab something by Emily Henry. You never know, you might just become a beach read defender as well.
