Why Broadway’s The Outsiders Is Helping Its Source Material’s Comeback

The Outsiders has quickly become one of Broadway’s most popular shows in recent years. Based on the novel of the same name, the musical debuted on Broadway in April 2024. This Tony Award-winning coming-of-age show follows teenager Ponyboy Curtis and his life in Tulsa, Oklahoma, amidst class struggles and clashes against a rival gang, the Socs.

Most people remember The Outsiders as a book assigned to them in their grade school English classes. A classic in its own right, but largely overlooked outside of classrooms. That said, the sheer popularity of its recent musical adaptation would say otherwise. Since the release of the musical, The Outsiders has seen a slow but steady rise in pop culture.

Despite the source material dating back to the 1960s, it seems that many people still find its characters and themes relatable, as with any other coming-of-age story. The trials these characters go through, whether in or outside of school, still have a striking similarity to the problems of the modern age, particularly the ever-present racial and social injustices the main characters go through due to being rather poor.

No matter where people are across the country, people will find some portion of this story that sticks with them the most. Even more so in its musical adaptation, which gives its characters new life and intriguing additions due to it being in a different medium.

While its comeback might not be at the scale of Wicked, The Outsiders will be in Broadway’s catalog for a decent amount of years in the future.
