A night out used to mean crop tops, mini skirts and everything sheer. Showing more skin was the uniform for a fun night out to the club or a dinner date with the girls. But lately, a shift in outfits has been happening on the dance floors. Going out clothes are starting to look more like…office attire? High necklines, loose pants and everything covered up is the new look. In a time ruled by self expression and empowerment, why is more fabric suddenly more stylish?
Social media definitely plays a role. Influencers have begun preaching this “office siren” look, and young women are embracing it. This modesty movement might be women wanting to look more sophisticated or intentional, or, perhaps, it’s an act of rebellion from “typical” party girl look.
The “clean girl” aesthetic is also one of the most popular trends today. It is defined by a soft elegance or an “old money” look. It’s all about being subdued in your wardrobe, so perhaps a way to achieve that is looking more classy instead of wanting a shock value.
But, honestly, it feels a little bit boring? On a night out, you see people all dressed in the same outfit. The long coats and kitten heels are starting to become a tad bit redundant. In a generation that preaches personal style, it feels like we’ve lost all of it.
Gen Z is all about comfort, though. Covering up might make some feel more comfortable in their skin, or possibly even feel more safe. This shift may be about dressing for yourself versus dressing for the gaze of others.
Today designers and influencers are also embracing a sort of 90s minimalism and reimagined modesty. Because of this shifting pendulum, fashion seems to be all together abandoning a hypersexualized look and swinging towards mystery.
I guess the idea is that what you wear to go out should make you feel good. If that means a low-cut top, go for it. If it means a sweater and a blazer, rock it. Certain aesthetics or trends are always going to dominate the fashion world, but don’t let it stop you from wearing what makes you feel hot on a night out.
Covering up has nothing to do with feeling less sexy. And being revealing doesn’t categorize you a certain way. It’s 2025 — wear a turtleneck, wear a thong, just make sure it’s on your terms.
