What’s the best thing to devour during the summertime? Lemonades, popsicles and watermelons are clearly at the top of the list – however, there is one that absolutely trumps all. One that is just as hydrating but can melt in your mouth. Maybe, even give you a bit of a headache, but still worth it. A cooling food that you can count on anytime – ice cream. That’s what everyone loves, especially making grown adults stop the ice cream trucks. A carnival-esque experience, there is one company that is making waves, redefining what it means to eat ice cream. Better yet, redefining how we think of ice cream.
Introducing ice cream company, Salt & Straw. Originating from Portland, Oregon, the company was founded in 2011 by cousins Kim and Tyler Malek. Neither of them had any prior experience, but they loved ice cream. Tyler even bought four ice cream makers, spending hours testing flavor ideas in his cousin’s basement. Time passed by, and Kim was later able to afford a push cart. The two began interacting with their community on advice, and the rest is history.
Named after the traditional method of ice cream making, the company uses rock salt and dry ice to store the frozen dessert. Starting from scratch in all of its locations in the United States, the company focuses on community. Collaborating with artisans, local makers, farmers, and chefs in order to provide a sense of dedication and love.
These aren’t the only aspects that make Salt & Straw stand out. The restaurant has a rotating menu that features five new flavours every month. Otherwise known as “Launch Friday”, where customers line up to be the first to try the new flavours.
Furthermore, what’s Salt & Straw without the unconventional flavor combinations? Inspired by the founder’s travels and experiences, ranging from Malted Potato Chip Cupcake, Black Olive Brittle & Goat Cheese, Chocolate Chili Crisp Peanut Butter Cups, Strawberry Tres Leches and more.
The company is fearless with its output and direction. Salt & Straw is an excellent ice cream brand that is changing how we view the dessert. Make sure you stop by a Salt & Straw location in New York. It’s some good eats.
