Korean beauty products have seen a noticeable rise not only in the United States but in other Western countries in recent years. Unsurprisingly, the popularity of Korean media, including K-pop and K-dramas, amongst younger generations has likely facilitated interest in various Korean products.
This has led to a market for K-Beauty products to explode. K-Beauty esports exceeded $10.2 billion in 2024, and South Korea is now the third-highest cosmetics exporter globally, with skincare being one of its top products.
With how lucrative this industry has become, it seemed that success would only continue to grow. That said, the K-Beauty Industry has been running into some problems. The Trump Administration’s tariffs have dealt a massive blow to many industries that rely on imported goods; the K-Beauty industry within the US is facing some of its biggest losses.
While the industry might keep some of its wealthy customers, the price increases due to these tariffs have caused many consumers to cut back on buying. If tariffs continue, industries like K-Beauty will likely be forced out of the United States.
Regardless, the popularity of Korean pop culture amongst younger generations online is what has maintained consumer interest. Despite the damage from the tariffs, as long as the interest is there, the K-beauty industry will always have a way in with American consumers. Additionally, with the recent roadblocks against Trump’s tariffs from the Supreme Court, the chance of the lifting could see a massive rebound for the industry.
Until then, things will remain uncertain.
