Sports gambling has always been a bit of a problem, but recent years have seen a rising trend of younger people entering in, and most concerningly, teenage boys. Sports betting is easier than ever before, thanks to online apps, which have widened the entry point to anyone with a mobile device.
Young men between the ages of 18 and 25 are the most susceptible to developing gambling addictions; despite this, the Sports industry is showing no signs of effectively preventing these addictions. Sports Gambling is one of the best revenue streams for the industry. In 2025 alone, sports betting revenue hit a record of $16.96 billion annually.
While grown adults can determine for themselves how and if they should participate in sports gambling, measures should be made to protect young people. Luckily, New York is one of the few US states that’s leading the charge in those endeavors.
According to the New York State Gaming Commission, New York Governor Kathy Hochul introduced draft gaming regulations aimed at safeguarding against underage gambling in sports betting apps, restrictions on operators’ use of artificial intelligence, better intervention measures for users showing signs of gambling addiction, and more.
Its a step that for many has been long overdue. Gambling addictions have always been a problem, not just the detrimental effects on a single person’s life, but the compound effects on their family and children. However, since the barrier to entry has gotten younger and younger, these effects that often happen to older adults will have even bigger consequences on younger people, especially teenagers. More states should follow New York’s steps to safeguard the next generation of young men.
