Will We Get Our First Female President? (Op-Ed)

On July 21 2024, with President Biden dropping out of running in the reelection, we were almost instantly given Kamala Harris, the Vice President, as a replacement candidate. President Biden endorsed Harris instantly.

In the almost 250 years as a country, there has never once been a woman as the President of the United States. As of 2020, Kamala Harris became the first female Vice President. In the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton was the first woman to make it as the lead nominee in a presidential election. Clinton lost to Trump, but in the history of women, she made it the farthest in the campaign.

In the past week, Harris has received incredible support for her campaign. Harris has been a massive hit on social media, with many young voters creating edits of her on apps such as TikTok. Her laughter and funny comments have created a huge buzz around her. Since she announced running, there has been an incredible increase in young voters registering. Harris has been appealing to Gen Z, aiming to get them on her side.

There has been an incredible amount of backlash against Harris for several reasons, one being that she is a woman. There has always been a negative stigma about women in politics. There has been an incredible increase in women entering political positions in the recent century. The President is the overall leader of the entire country, and people who are stuck in old misogynistic mindsets feel that a woman could never fill this position.

This is exactly a reason as to why we need a female president. The world has continued to evolve, and more equal rights have finally come into place. Women are becoming closer and closer to obtaining these official leadership roles.

Kamala Harris has a history of being a District Attorney of San Francisco, Attorney General of California, U.S. Senator from California, and now Vice President of the United States. Harris has a great deal of experience with the people of America. She has tremendous reform efforts to change America for the better. Harris has worked hard to create better, positive changes while serving the country.

Harris has not yet been confirmed as the Democratic nominee but has received support from well over the number of delegates needed. Hopefully, Kamala Harris will become our first female president this November.
