For the fans of baseball, you might be happy to hear that the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) is set to begin in 2026. The league is set to start with teams in four cities: New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
The four cities were chosen because of their deep roots in baseball and because they have the largest audience for the new league. WPBL co-founder Justine Siegal has said, “Each of these cities are storied sports cities and we can’t wait to connect with the fans who live there and baseball fans across the country,”.
The WPBL was founded in October of last year, 2024. It has been scheduled to begin competitions in May 2026. The first official WPBL draft is set to begin this upcoming November, which will be done virtually. Each team is expected to select around 15 new players for their rosters.
Many new players have come out and expressed their support for the league and their excitement to compete on a professional level in the United States. Famous professional sports players have also come out and made statements to support the new league. One example is Healey, a former pro basketball player.
Healey has come out and said in a statement, “I’m just a big cheerleader for the sport. Whatever we can do to make it the absolute best venue for these women and for the fan experience, we want to do. So I look forward to more discussions with folks in the days, weeks, months ahead.”
Many are looking forward to seeing what these women can do once the league opens, and it will certainly be a sight you won’t want to miss.
