DJ LeMahieu was a batting champion and infielder who has played for the New York Yankees for seven seasons, since 2019, however it seems LeMahieu’s time with the Yankees is over as the New York Yankees reported on X, at 10:51 AM, stating that “Today, the Yankees released INF DJ LeMahieu from the roster.”
Many fans were left bewildered at this sudden news, as many felt varying degrees of distress at the sudden news, with many others feeling a slight sense of relief, it’s a mixed bag to be sure. This sudden release of LeMahieu follows several notable injuries and an eventual demotion to the bench. Now, LeMahieu is a free agent, waiting to see what the future holds.
It is a notable loss for the team, as according to Yahoo Sports, team manager Aaron Boone states “It’s been a tough couple days, some hard conversations and then ultimately coming to this decision, obviously not easy for what’s been a great player” and that “He’s done a lot of great things for this organization, but at the end, I feel like this is the right thing to do at this time.”
LeMahieu after being released early from his $90 million contract with the New York Yankees is still owed $22 million, as their six-year deal was meant to continue all throughout the year 2026. According to the New York Post, “the Yankees are officially on the hook for that money while LeMahieu is a free agent, available to sign with any team on what would likely be the minimum salary.”
