Last night, after Yankee’s ace Gerrit Cole became a late scratch, NY put Will Warren on the mound. This was due to what they call “general body fatigue” for Cole, who is not expected to be out long-term.
The 25-year-old righty shined in what was his MLB debut. He let up four hits and four earned runs, with just two walks and six strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched. His mother, who was in attendance, was brought to tears by this performance as shown on the YES broadcast.
The lone sore spot for Warren was the three-run home run he let up in the bottom of the second. The homer came off the bat of Austin Hays, recently acquired by the Phillies from the Baltimore Orioles. Despite being traded out of the division, Hays continued his domination of the Yankees, putting up four RBIs on the day.
The Yankees had success batting, and it came from a familiar culprit. For the second straight game, Jazz Chisolm Jr. homered twice. This made him the first player in franchise history to have four home runs in his first three games as a New York Yankee. His final stats were 3/6 with a single, two home runs, and five RBIs.
Things weren’t easy for the Yanks though, the game ended up going into extra innings after a wild pitch from Clay Holmes scored Johan Rojas. Things came to a halt until the 11th inning when Alex Verdugo hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Anthony Volpe from third. Hays then matched that run in the bottom of the inning with a single that scored Bryson Stott.
Finally, in the 12th inning, Gleyber Torres drove in a run and Michael Tonkin came in and retired the side securing the win for the Yankees. New York will go for this sweep this afternoon at 12:35 p.m.
