At Monday’s practice in Detroit, the Lions lost three young players to injury. Rookies Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw both left practice early after suffering an upper-body injury and ankle injury respectively. The biggest blow came when 2023 first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs sustained what the team originally called a leg injury. It has now been made clear that the injury is to his hamstring.
Last season Gibbs broke out for 945 rushing yards, 316 receiving yards, and 11 touchdowns in his rookie campaign. He was a massive part of the Lion’s offensive success in their run to the NFC Championship. Making the injury to the 2023 Pro Bowl running back concerning for Detroit fans and fantasy football managers alike.
Despite this, ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who was one of the first to report the injury, seemed optimistic about the injury. “I don’t know the extent of the hamstring…I would guess we will not see Jahymr Gibbs for the rest of the summer and we will prepare to see him on opening night against the Los Angeles Rams. When you’re talking about a player this explosive, this dynamic this talented, obviously it’s a huge concern anytime there is any sort of injury but again [a] hamstring would tell me that he’s gonna have a real chance to be back on opening night,” he said on the “The Pat McAfee Show”.
This gives Gibbs 26 days to get right before the Lion’s first game, September 8th on Sunday Night Football.
