Monday night the Yankees dropped the first matchup of a three-game set against the MLB-worst 29-win White Sox. Last night, they looked to bounce back from that 12-2 blowout loss, and they did just that.
Juan Soto was the player of the night for the Yankees, he went 3/4 on the night with three home runs and 4 RBIs. The first home run came in the top of the third inning when Soto took a pitch from Jonathan Cannon to the opposite field and the ball barely soared over the left field fence.
The next two home runs were absolute no-doubters, Soto crushing them 413 and 406 feet respectively. This marked the first time in his young career that he hit three home runs in a single game. In the locker room, he was asked by reporters what it meant to him to reach that milestone. He replied, “It means a lot. It’s really fun. It’s really cool to see it, and even better to get the win out of it.”
Soto was not the only Yankee with a great performance. Starting Pitcher Nestor Cortes had arguably his best game of the entire season. He looked phenomenal through 7 innings where he struck out 9 batters allowing no runs and just three hits before being taken out. This outing earned him the win, bringing his season record to 6-10.
The White Sox’s lone run didn’t come until there were two outs in the eighth inning. Luis Robert Jr. picked up his 27th RBI of the season with a single to deep center field. The game ended with the score of Juan Soto 4- Chicago White Sox 1.
The W also put the Yankees back in first place in the AL East. The Orioles, who had been ahead of New York for a few weeks, now sit a half-game behind them in the rankings.
Tonight, we will see Will Warren on the mound for New York and Davis Martin for Chicago in the series finale, with the first pitch coming at 8:10 pm.
