The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have issued a new recall alert due to potential Listeria contamination. This latest recall affects frozen waffles produced by TreeHouse Foods Inc.
According to the FDA, Listeria infection can be especially dangerous for young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems, often leading to severe symptoms. In healthy adults, symptoms can include high fever, severe headache, muscle stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women are also at heightened risk, as Listeria can lead to serious complications, including miscarriages and stillbirths.
These waffles can be found in the US and Canada usually under generic food brands like Best Choice, Good & Gather, Great Value, Kodiak Cakes, Compliments; Western Family, Food Lion, Selection, Breakfast Best, Publix, and more. Treehouse Foods announced its voluntary recall on October 18 and has continued in effect since then. For a full list of products affected, head over to their press release.
Consumers are encouraged to check their freezers for the recalled products and to dispose of them properly if found. Additionally, the FDA advises thoroughly cleaning refrigerators and surfaces that may have come into contact with the affected items to reduce any risk of contamination.
This recall follows similar recent recalls of frozen waffles and other items, including smoked salmon, due to Listeria concerns. However, there have been no confirmed illnesses or fatalities associated with this recall to date.
