Are Conservative Politics Influencing Fall Fashion Trends?

Though the conservative swing in American politics may have come as a surprise to many, one demographic saw it coming months ago: fashion bloggers. From trends highlighting “Trad Wives” on social media to the incredibly popular premiere of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives on Hulu earlier this year, many clocked a shift toward conservatism in the fashion world long before any ballots were cast.

Summer’s biggest fashion trends evoked Americana, diving into styles that hadn’t seen the light of day since the Bush administration. Ralph Lauren polos, dainty jackets, and matching tracksuits all point to a “Country Club” aesthetic once again putting emphasis on elegance and old money.

As we move into fall fashion, more aristocratic trends seem to be coming back into style. Alternative fashion, like Doc Martin boots and leather jackets, are being cast aside in favor of knee-high pleather boots, long peacoats, and dainty hair bows. Animal print is also coming back in full swing – a nod to luxury and elegance. Leave the mini-skirts for the Sweat tour, this fall all the girls are wearing long denim skirts and dresses – the less skin showing the better.

Even hair and makeup trends are taking a turn toward the conservative. Bright eyeshadows and intricate contouring are out in 2024. Now, all the makeup gurus are embracing the “Clean Girl Aesthetic” focusing on slicked back buns and ponytails, lightly curled hair, and minimal makeup with a hint of blush.

Trends in apparel often predict the political climate. “Fashion trends don’t exist in a vacuum; trends are often indicative of larger cultural and societal shifts,” Danielle Vermeer, head of social commerce at ThredUp said. “For many people, fashion is a medium for self-expression, social signaling, and alignment with different subcultures. Fashion is political and it’s never just about the clothes.”

For women, dressing more conservatively is also a safeguard as more states pass laws banning abortion and contraception. When men can point to a woman’s outfit and use it as evidence to convict her of promiscuity, especially in a climate where a miscarriage can be considered an abortion, there’s safety in hiding behind a long skirt and peacoat.
