If You’re Over 24, You Need to be Using Vitamin C Serum

While many people notice wrinkles and fine lines on their faces by their mid-30s, research from scientists at the University of Utah indicates they begin forming as early as the mid-20s due to the body’s natural decrease in collagen production, which, for most, begins around age 24. Increased use of drugs, alcohol, and nicotine can cause collagen decrease to occur even sooner.

One of the best products on the market to increase collagen production is ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C. Ascorbic acid can improve everything from fine wrinkles to skin discoloration. Daily product use can help the skin remain firm, youthful, and even-toned.

An antioxidant, vitamin C also protects the skin from free radicals—tiny molecules that can damage skin cells over time. People exposed to X-rays, chemotherapy, or unprotected prolonged sun exposure have likely been exposed to more of these highly chemically reactive molecules, which can speed up the skin’s aging process. Vitamin C can help reverse these effects.

However, daily vitamin C use must be paired with daily facial sunscreen. Vitamin C is an unstable molecule that breaks down and becomes less effective when exposed to light and air. Sunscreen will help protect the serum as it works. A quality serum will come in airtight, non-clear packaging to protect it from light exposure. Avoid using serums in clear glass containers or jars, as they may be less effective.

Vitamin C serum can irritate those with sensitive skin or conditions such as eczema. For those who experience redness or breakouts when using the serum, dermatologists recommend starting with a small dose every other day and building tolerance up.

Vitamin C serum is one of the best ways to protect the skin and prevent premature aging and wrinkles. Even though you may not notice them yet, your body produces less collagen if you’re over 24, and wrinkles develop. Daily use of this product, paired with sunscreen, is recommended by top dermatologists and a hack many celebrities have taken advantage of for decades.
