The Freedom of Leaving the House Bare-Faced

Have you ever seen those shows where the husband is very adamant about their wife not leaving the house unless they have makeup on? The woman will get ready to leave just to go to the grocery store or even just to the bank, and their husband sees them right before she exits the house, and he demands that she change. Sometimes they want her to do it, if they go out to eat, just to show her off, like she is his property and she’s an item at an auction.

I don’t have anyone telling me not to leave the house without making a dress or a skirt or whatever else, because it’s 2026 and times have changed. I think some husbands still feel like they are the authority figure in households and their word is law, but that is ridiculous to think. I grew up as a tomboy. I never wore dresses, skirts, or makeup, and I’ve never had a romantic partner ask me to.

I feel sorry for the wives who have to deal with that because, today, makeup isn’t just a woman thing, and you can wear makeup even as a man, and shouldn’t be judged for it either. Some men actually look really good in makeup, and that goes for transmen and transwoman, because like all things, like clothes, children’s toys, books, and movies, makeup isn’t for one gender. Makeup is for people who feel the need to look pretty, but having the freedom just to leave the house and not have to spend hours on makeup on my face.

I am happy that some women are more of the authority figure in the house, and they prove they can work and do whatever a man can do. I am all for women’s equality, but I think it should be human equality. Not having someone demand that I cake my face and spend tons of money on expensive eyeliner or lipstick, and spend it on things I enjoy, like books and video games, lets me enjoy life without having to worry about social norms.

I hope for a day when not wearing makeup is seen as normal and isn’t looked down on. We all deserve to have a choice about what we put in or on our bodies!
