Beauty Filters Are Training Us to Dislike Our Real Faces

For as long as I could remember I’ve hated having my picture taken. Picture day at school, my grandma putting me in dresses at the age that I had no control over what I wore, posing for family photos and not being able to be myself. When I got older I still hated it, but now I could make my average looking face and take away the scars, and blemishes and all that “ugly” features and make my face look like its “perfect.”

That’s the sad part though, unfortunately nobody can have scars, or scratches or any imperfect feature otherwise in the eyes of the media they are ugly. I never wore makeup if I could help it and that’s never helped me. As soon as AI filters became a thing, and you send pictures on apps like snapchat suddenly you are beautiful and getting tons of attention, unwanted attention in my case.

I feel as though it’s making us hate our natural faces. We are conditioned to use filters to make us look prettier and just sending a picture of you being silly or whatever is not what people want. Then there are the beauty influencers on YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram that get followers because they use filters and makeup.

Young girls are very influenced and you should never tell them they need to wear makeup to be popular or accepted into society. I was never popular and being autistic I never liked attention and definitely did not like having makeup on. I did notice that people I graduated high school with, commented on me dressing “girly” when I decided to wear makeup and a dress for the first time in public.

The world is so judgemental for basically everything. What you wear, how you look, even how you talk or who you are dating. It’s hard enough to survive in this day of age and we should all just accept people for who they are. We shouldn’t have to apologize for how we look and we definitely don’t need filters. The world would be better without it.
