A man was found dead alongside a severely decomposing woman’s body inside of a home in Queens, NYPD sources say. Authorities responded to a 911 call around 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon and discovered the two bodies in the 80th Street Queens home.
According to the police, the man was a 57-year-old, and he appeared to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The woman, whose body had been decomposing for a while, was identified as an 88-year-old, but her cause of death, nor time of death, has been confirmed.
Detectives recovered a firearm from the scene but did not confirm if it was registered under the man or if it was used to inflict his gunshot wound. The relationship between the two individuals remains unclear, but next-door neighbors say the man and woman were mother and son, the New York Post reported.
The home on 80th Street between Queens Midtown Expressway and 58th Avenue in Middle Village remains under investigation. A medical examiner will still have to examine the cause and time of death of the deceased woman’s body.
CBS News reported that many neighbors were shocked at the discovery as they believed they lived in a safe and quiet neighborhood, leading many to question what could’ve happened.
