There was quite a shock for all those onboard the submarine “Sindbad” this Thursday when the craft sank off the coast of the Red Sea. The submarine had a total of 45 passengers, who were there to explore the coral reefs found near the city of Hurghada. Thirty-nine of the total passengers aboard the vessel were quickly rescued, with six confirmed deaths due to the incident.
Many of the rescued passengers were injured to varying degrees, with some even needing oxygen assistance in the hospital. So far, nothing concrete has been said about what could have caused the submarine to sink. There are reports that the sub may have descended too low and taken damage from the reef below, but the report seems only to be a theory. The crew members are being questioned at this time.
This has become a big investigation for all parties involved. The passengers that were found dead were all confirmed to be Russian tourists, leaving the consulate to find out what the issue was. Tourism is a large part of Egypt’s economy, with its impressive pyramids and natural wonders attracting sightseers everywhere. However, Egypt has had an issue with Red Sea excursions before, leaving many to wonder what could be causing this streak of incidents and death.
There is still uncertainty about the passengers in the hospital, but we can hope for a quick recovery for them. We can also hope that the cause of the incident can be discovered so that something like this can never happen again.
